Starved Rock
Starved Rock is a state park brimming with natural beauty known for its cascading waterfalls and breathtaking canyons. As you pedal away from the city, you’ll experience the transition between the urban landscape to charming small towns and scenic countryside. This two-day adventure has lodging provided for riders in the welcoming town of Morris where dinner, warm showers and cozy rooms will be provided.
Riders will wake up early to reach Starved Rock and be given some time to explore the diverse hiking trails and picturesque overlooks that the state park has to offer. After a delicious lunch, your guide will take you on a kayaking tour through the sandstone cliffs that are home to bald eagles, pelicans, and turtles. The outdoor adventures will conclude as you get driven back to Chicago, full of unforgettable moments from a thrilling weekend.
Itinerary
Day 1
Departure
Bikers will be asked to arrive at the meet-up location at 7am on Saturday morning with everything they need for the ride. Check our packing list for more details on what to pack. Riders’ bags will be loaded up into the vehicle while the riders apply sunscreen provided by our team.
Before rolling out, your guide will conduct a morning brief to review the 70 mile route, safety protocols and address any concerns or preferences among the riders.
Rest Stops
A rest stop will be scheduled for every 15 miles, but this increment is often adjusted based on the fatigue of riders, the weather conditions, and the need for any bathroom breaks. The riders have full say of how often rest stops are made to ensure everyone has a comfortable and safe ride.
Lunch
Enjoy a break at a sandwich shop, where you'll be served a healthy and satisfying lunch. The meal includes a variety of freshly made sandwiches, chips, and refreshing drinks to keep you energized for the rest of your journey.
Arrival in Morris
After 70 miles of biking you will arrive at the Morris Quality Inn where you be greeted with hot showers followed by a warm dinner. Your bags will be waiting for you at your hotel where you can get some well-deserved sleep.
Day 2
Wake up:
Start the day with provided coffee and breakfast before the pre-ride briefing that reviews the 30 mile ride to Starved Rock.
Arrival in Starved Rock:
You made it! Bikes will be left with your guide while you will be given time to explore the state park. We encourage you to walk some of the 13 miles of hiking trails, many of which lead to large waterfalls. Stay to the east end of the park if you want less technical hiking or venture to Wildcat Canyon for a longer hike with some of the most sensational views of the park.
Lunch
Return to the parks picnic area or a predetermined lunch spot. A nutritious lunch will be provided featuring sandwiches, fresh fruit, and refreshing beverages.
Kayaking
Head to the Illinois River for your kayaking experience. Your guide will navigate you down the river in two seated kayaks while you can take in the beautiful scenery. Kayak next to the canyons and the St. Peters bluffs that run the entire length of Starved Rock.
Drive back to Chicago
After lunch, get driven back to Chicago. You'll arrive between 4-5pm on Sunday, and you'll be able to collect your bike and bags from the drop off location.
What to Expect
There is flat to rolling terrain for most of the route, but expect hills and climbs closer to Starved Rock State Park. Paved paths and roads dominate, with occasional gravel sections on rural roads.
This tour is designed for intermediate to advanced riders with some experience and a reasonable level of fitness. When booking, riders can choose a pace that matches their skill level. Keep in mind that the longer the distance, the slower the pace should be selected.
All food and lodging will be included in the trip price. Riders need to come prepared with all necessary gear included in our packing list. Luggage transportation each way and transport of your bike back to Chicago is included. Our support vehicle will be available for any of the circumstances highlighted in our safety packet.
